I think I actually bought this pulp for the cover. From memory, I believe it featured a girl on horseback, wearing a mask, riding hell-bent, and holding a smoking pistol. So I picked it up, hoping to find a scene like this in the lead story. Unfortunately that wasn't to be. [2002-09-02]

We've posted several of Paul Chadwick's Wade Hammond stories recently. But like so many pulpsters, he tried his hand in many genres. Here is one of his science fiction yarns that looks almost as if it could have been inspiration for Wyndham's classic, "Day of the Triffids". [2003-06-01]

Stephen Chalmers
  The Great God Ananzi
[11 pages, 119K]
Adventure
1st August, 1918

In African folklore the Ananzi spider is a wise and powerful god. It looks a bit like a tarantula but it's not. Tarantulas are pretty deadly. Warden has been sent down to a small port in Jamaica to learn the banana business. Six days of the week the port village is quiet but the seventh is "Banana Day" when the freighters arrive, the farmers bring in the crops and the two wholesalers, a banana trust and an Independent Alliance vie for their wares. Currently there's a boom in bananas fueled by a fear that a tax is going to laid on them. The buyer for Warden's company seems to be laying down on the job and in the end recommends that his father fire him. between the time the buyer was ordered to report to the company's headquarters and him getting there things have changed. The tax has been scuttled, prices for bananas have plunged and the Trust company is going to have to throw away tons of the fruit. But the Independent alliance, because they failed to buy up as many bananas are their rival, will not be hurt as badly by the market crash. The buyer explains that he had had a hunch, possibly from the Ananzi spider that a crash was coming so had added as he had to discourage purchases. [2017-11-25]
